The History of the Connection
Nutrition and Social Services for Seniors

Our History

Hunt County Council on Aging, Inc. incorporated on December 13, 1976 to serve senior citizens (60 years of age and older) in Hunt County, expanding to include Rockwall County in 1986.

Our goal is to prevent institutionalization of the elderly by assisting them in remaining independent and to enhance their overall quality of life. Support services initiated in the HCCOA service area included:

  • congregate meals at senior centers
  • home delivered meals
  • homemaking services
  • advocacy
  • nutrition education
  • senior transportation
  • information and referral
  • telephone reassurance

In 1989, HCCOA added The Connection public transit system to provide limited public transportation to the communities of Hunt and Rockwall Counties. The Connection has wheelchair-accessible vehicles to accommodate handicapped passengers Transportation was expanded to include the general public, with wheelchair-accessible vehicles to accommodate handicapped passengers. The demand response system's curb to curb and door to door service initiated in 1989 is still in effect. The Connection was designated a Rural Transit District (RTD) by act of the 1995 Texas legislature. The Connection now servers only Hunt County.

The Texas Emergency Food Program and Project Happen heating assistance administered by HCCOA in the past are no longer available through our agency due to the elimination of operating and administrative cost reimbursements for these programs. Demands for service in the areas listed above prevented direct HCCOA funding for these projects.
